Rice straw
ABOUT RICE STRAW HAY
Rice straw is easily accessible, suitable and cost effective source of roughage for feeding ruminants like buffaloes, cattle, goats, and sheep. In order to create reserved feed for their animals when high-quality roughages are in short supply, livestock producers typically haul and stack rice straw from their rice farm.
Rice straw contains 3% to 6% protein. It has thick cell walls, acid and neutral detergent fibers (NDF and ADF), and degradable carbohydrate fractions like cellulose and hemicellulose. It also contains lignin, an indigestible phenolic substance. Rice straw is mostly used as bulk or filler to help ruminants meet their dry matter needs when fed as fodder. Eighty percent of these substances have the potential to be biodegradable and provide energy. It contains 92–96% dry matter (DM), which is a high percentage.
